For many years now, students in Asian countries have been
leading the world in mathematics, reading, and science, especially China,
Korea, and Singapore. This has been true for so long that it’s impossible for
the numbers to be a statistical fluke, and educators and parents alike wonder
how they do it. What is their secret?
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)
tracks academic performance in more than 70 industrialized nations, producing a
comprehensive report every three years. In 2012, the U.S. fell to 31st place in
math rankings, with the aforementioned nations at the top. The study showed
that only 2% of American students can generalize, conceptualize, and use
mathematical concepts in creative ways. In Asian countries, it’s over 30%.
Surveys indicate that this educational excellence is the
product of a belief in hard work and that students have control over their
achievements, and a willingness to embrace a diversity of instructional methods
to accommodate the different ways that individual students learn, with high
expectations and confidence that even an ordinary student can achieve
extraordinary results.
Eye Level Learning was founded in 1976 by Korean educator
Dr. Young Joong Kang. His teaching philosophy emphasizes individual instruction
with an incremental approach based on each child’s demonstrated abilities.
Today, over 2.5 million children in 19 countries have received tutoring through
the Eye Level program.
